The Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) is a business programme developed by the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Trust. Senior secondary school students form business companies and follow a business process, supported by teachers, a business mentor and the regional co-ordinator. The Scheme gives students an opportunity to develop their passion into a possible career choice. They set up their own company, create real products/services, earn real money, pay real tax and, hopefully, continue their passion in the real world. It’s not just an academic course, but a relevant and exciting (life) journey. Some of the many aspects are teamwork, community spirit, NCEA credits and building confidence.
The Young Enterprise Scheme Top of the South represents the high schools / colleges from Buller to Picton. The regional coordinator is Anne Harvey who works with the schools, teachers and students and connects them with the business community, Mentors, investors and support from local business people. She is supported by Alex Bradley, Event Co-ordinator at NMIT in organising events.
During the year four major events are part of the program:
- Term one: E-Day (Entrepreneurial Day) Introduction and matching up with mentors.
- Term two: The YES Dragon’s Den (Pitching ideas to Judges/Investors)
- Term three: Trade Fair at the Nelson Saturday Market and
- Term four: Regional Awards. The team that will participate in the National competition.
These events are made possible through generous sponsorship’s, with the EDA and NMIT as partners and several other ‘in kind’ sponsors.
