The region has approximately 60 schools made up of primary, intermediate and secondary, including New Zealand’s oldest state secondary school, Nelson College, established in 1856.

There is a good variety of short courses available through Nelson’s colleges after business hours. Courses range from art, computers, French, parenting skills, winemaking to yoga, and much more.

Nelson School of Music
The Nelson School of Music is nationally recognised for its high standard of tuition and as having the only purpose-built conservatoire in the country, providing the best acoustics in the Southern Hemisphere. The Nelson School of Music is the oldest independent music school in New Zealand having been established in 1894.
More than 50,000 people attend courses, concerts, workshops and take musical tuition. The school offers practical, hands-on community courses from preschool level to adult classes.
The auditorium hosts the Adam Chamber Music Festival, Ceol Aneass Irish Festival and Young Composers Workshop, regional choirs and orchestras, and numerous concerts – from rock to classical.
Annually the school presents the Winter Festival – featuring international and local music.

NMIT – Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is one of New Zealand’s larger tertiary providers with approximately 3,000 equivalent fulltime students a year. Along with quality education opportunities and a broad offering of more than 80 programmes at certificate, diploma or degree level, NMIT’s central location is an attractive choice for students drawn to the region’s many beaches, national parks, wonderful climate, entertainment and lifestyle.

English Language Tuition
Nelson has become a popular destination for international students requiring English language tuition. In Nelson, English language schools offer a range of short ‘preparation courses’ to the more comprehensive study options with internationally-recognised examinations.
The Nelson English Centre and the Richmond Hills English Language Centre are conveniently located, allowing for short travel distances (bike or walk), easy access to Nelson’s libraries, local beaches and cafés.
